The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The 66-year-old actor died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after battling stage-four cancer. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, confirmed the heartbreaking news during an emotional live session on Instagram. 
Ogogo was one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades. He was known not only as an actor but also as a producer, director, and screenwriter who made significant contributions to the Nigerian film industry. 
Born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, Taiwo Hassan began his acting journey in the early 1980s. Before pursuing acting full-time, he worked as an automobile mechanic and later with the Lagos State Water Corporation.
Throughout his illustrious career, he featured in numerous Yoruba and English-language productions, including Owo Blow, Omo Ghetto, Tenant of the House and Aníkúlápó. His appearance in Aníkúlápó also introduced his work to a younger generation of viewers. 
News of Ogogo's deteriorating health had attracted widespread concern in recent days after his family disclosed that he was battling advanced cancer and appealed to medical professionals for assistance. Fellow actors and filmmakers also gathered in Lagos for a special prayer session in honor of the veteran actor. 
His death marks the end of an era for one of the enduring figures of Yoruba cinema. His distinctive performances, filmmaking contributions, and decades of service to the Nigerian entertainment industry will remain part of his legacy.
